INDi2010 Update: A year of change By: Skeets Morel Nationals is almost here, meaning the 2007/08 ski season is coming to a close shortly. This year has definitely been a different one for me with a whole lot of change. First off being invited to join INDi2010 starting back in April, which gave me the freedom and flexibility I so desperately needed. This allowed me to do the things I wanted to do where I wanted to do them, and most importantly when I wanted to do them. Starting off with being able to move out to Calgary and live with my girlfriend for the summer, as she finished off school. I was able to explore the ever inviting K-Country, whether it was a long run with my dad or a sweet road ride along highway 40. It was definitely a summer to remember and then the unforgettable Evil Knievel stunt happened, throwing a huge wrench into my plans. From then on my whole training focus changed drastically; get my arms back to where they were as fast as possible while still building my fitness. It was somewhat of a welcome change as I was able to experiment with my training in ways I never would have thought of. My favorite as you may recall was lugging salt up hill for an hour and a half at times, or going for an hour plus legs only roller ski. My legs still have never been as strong as they are now; I have a whole new appreciation for a legs only workout. Another huge change was finally completing my undergrad in December and leaving my home province of Ontario for the winter. This marked the first time in 20 years that I didn't have to think about school and I could finally do what I had dreamt about my entry ski career. It was a major change as every day's focus was no longer classes and school work; it was now skiing and rest. With moving out to Silver Star BC, thinking and living skiing was quite easy. I am proud to say that the longest commute to go skiing in the last month has been the walk up from the village to my apartment, which is no more then 3 minutes. Plus, being able to link the Sovereign Lake trails with Silver Star has allowed me to have such a variety in my skiing. The last major change was my focus from May 1st of last year to become a sprinter. My best results have always come from sprinting so it was natural decision. My training didn't change all that much but with that clear cut objective it made so many training decisions easier. I know I still have a lot of work to do before I can truly call myself a sprinter but the first step is always the hardest. I think all of this change definitely paid off, as I was able to compete in the World Cups in Canmore. I was a little disappointed with my results but the only place I can go is up. I have seen what the best in the world can do and now know where I need to improve. I know that the season isn't over yet but I am already excited about qualifying for next years World Cup sprints in Callaghan Valley. First off though, Nationals, and getting a taste of what is to come in Callaghan.
